POPPIES

Poppy FieldGrace Landscapes Ltd recently donated a large bag of poppy seeds to Spen Valley District Scouts to help with the simple, long lasting and beautiful commemoration of the First World War.

It was Band Leader Joanna Nelson who put forward the suggestion to create a public display by growing poppies at each of their Scout headquarters, the Scout campsite at Fanwood and in the memorial garden at Cleckheaton.  The seeds will be used to help make a lasting and dignified tribute of those who lost their lives in the First World War.  In the centenary year of the commencement of hostilities, Spen Valley Scouts wanted to remember not only the four Scout Leaders killed on the Western Front from their district, but all those lost in the Great War.
