IN WITH THE NEW…KEEPING THE OLD
On the 1st of November, Grace Landscapes’ oldest employee reaches the grand age of 80 years old. Since January 2008 Brian Doyle of the North West region has worked a 6 hour week litter picking at the Manchester Business Park. This leaves him plenty of time which he puts to good use as he is currently re-landscaping his garden which involves taking down his 24ft x 8ft shed, erecting a new 10ft x 8ft shed and a lean-to. Married to Dorothy, Brian has 2 daughters, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, with another due in November. Having previously worked as a joiner for 18 years, Brian was already approaching normal retirement age when our youngest apprentice Liam was born in February 1997.
In contrast our 3 apprentices, Sam Lacey, Liam McDonald and Denjoe O’Connor, are just 16 and 17 years old. They joined us in the summer to do the QCF Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture (Landscaping). Cousins Liam and Denjoe share similar pass times, keeping friends and family’s gardens tidy and tinkering with motorbikes though their dream bike differs. Liam would go for a Husqvarna whilst Denjoe would opt for a KTM. Sam on the other hand enjoys coarse and fly fishing, regularly entering competitions in the Barnsley and Penistone area, a 15lb carp being his biggest catch to date.
