BRIGHTENING UP A DULL DAY
Grace Landscapes Ltd was recently asked to come up with a design to brighten up a dull corner at Fieldhead School in Batley. The area was used by the children for supervised play but is also one of the fire escape routes from the school. The time scale was tight as a design and costing needed to be agreed so the works could be completed in the half term holiday.
The remit was for a sensory garden to be enclosed but not to impede the movement of children from the school should the emergency access be required. The first proposal, comprising of planters, herb wheel with different mulch to each section to provide texture, taste and smell; boulder seats, smooth and barked logs was loved by the school. The open end was fenced with an arch over the gate so scented climbers could be trained over to soften the timber.
Local artificial turf company Eternal Lawns were approached to see if the flower stepping stones were feasible. They were, Eternal Lawns could fit the works in and the price came within the schools budget. Plants were sourced from Knowl Park Nursery to provide all year round interest, with spikey, hairy shrubs for touch, grasses with seed heads for sound, flowers for sight and smell with edible plants for taste.
The children, who hadn’t been told about the works, were delighted on their return to school and have spent many happy hours playing in the rejuvenated corner.
