BALI_2014_Landscape_Awards_Principal BALI awardsOn Friday 5th December Grace Landscapes Ltd were represented by Tim Grace, Hugh Pawsey and Ian Fearnley at the British Associations of Landscape Industries annual awards ceremony where they were presented with the Principal Award in the Schools and Community category.

The existing gardens at Kirkwood Hospice were redesigned and upgraded in conjunction with the new in-patient wing. After much consultation with the loBridge and labyrinth May 2015cal community, the idea was to provide accessibility to the garden for all. Installation of a commemorative block and resin-bound paths linking with a bridge and pond meant there were no restrictions. GLabyrinth borderarden rooms leading from the building are partitioned with planters and trellises and provide privacy and colour. The change in levels is accommodated by a path meandering through the herbaceous and shrub borders. The labyrinth of life installed in contrasting resin-bound gravel is a focal point of the garden and a natural resting place. Not only can the patients use the garden to get away for a quiet moment of reflection, but so can the staff and the local community. “Access all areas” indeed.

Judges’ comments

“What was originally an unremarkable hospice garden with lots of clutter is now an enchanting space that is accessible not only to staff, patients and families but to everyone within the hospice community.

“A bridge over a tranquil pool and established tree form a focal point while new pathways pass between beautiful boldly planted flower beds and raised planters. All works have been completed by the contractor to an excellent standard and the design developed with the hospice community.”
